The Scent Memory of Tobacco & Teakwood

Almost all Wax Crescent candle scents are created from moments and memories that are significant to me.

When I was very young, I lived in a little cottage in a wooded area with my parents and older sister. To little me, our property seemed big and endlessly expansive. I remember tall trees, a weeping willow–lots of thick bushes that seemed dark and scary–I could not have been older than three.

My parents rented the house from an older couple who lived next door. In my memories, their house was the only one close to ours although there could have been others that the thick woods covered or that my littleness could not see over tall bushes and shrubs.

I remember the smell of sweet smoke wafting through the air in the evenings–a thick and hypnotizing scent, and the old man who lived next door–his name was Ed–sitting on his front porch smoking a pipe. The smoke from the pipe would carry from his front porch into our yard where I played outside with my older sister. The scent was earthy with notes of dark cherry and cedar; complex, rich and alluring.

To this day, pipe tobacco is still one of my favorite smells. It reminds me of warm summer evenings, lightning bugs, and magic. It is an anchor to my very first memories–my youngest days–a time in my life where I was so protected, loved and curious about the newness of the world.
